It is acknowledged that tourism represents up to a third of the economy in the Dordogne region, with the Périgord enjoying 1,001 castles (or even more) according to Sylvie Chevallier, president of the Departmental Tourism Committee: “There are 661 castles, 67 fortified castles and 339 mansions, or 11% of the castles in the whole of France".
Please take a look here at this tourist video to get a flavour of the Perigord region.
One or two local pleasures are the World Heritage Grotte de Rouffignac at just a few kms, and also the famous Château de l'Herm, built in the 16th century and listed as an Historic Monument despite being in ruins for decades. It is famous for being the setting of a well known Eugène Le Roy novel 'Jacquou le Croquant' and is currently being totally restored by it's new owner - see story here
Needless to say, for all fans of historical sites a visit is de-rigeur.
